In Times of Corona...

Dearest Friends,

As you may have noticed, we’ve been a bit quiet lately. In light of circumstances surrounding COVID-19, and difficult times for friends and family in the States, we decided to lay low for a while.

It seemed like one moment we were bopping around New Orleans during Mardi Gras, celebrating the marriage of our friends Cory and Lydia at a huge party at Casa Cien, and throwing an epic baby shower for the Clarks at The Mansion… and then it was over. The music stopped, the party ended, and it was time to say goodbye.

It some ways, we feel like our last hurrahs before the virus exploded were apt. We hugged, we kissed, we danced on tables. But after three months of social distancing and many tears, we’re ready to figure out how to move forward. These circumstances could last for years, and we’re just trying to find a way to cope within the confines of today.

We can honestly say we’re not sure what the future holds for us. Many businesses and lives have been destroyed, both here and in the US. We’ve lost countless friends to moves back home to the States and Canada. Trying to figure out how to reconfigure our social circle here is difficult, as club meetings and church services are cancelled just like they are everywhere else.

On the positive side, what we have noticed are a few really wonderful things. Expats are giving generously to charitable causes in San Miguel, and most families who employ domestic staff are keeping them employed, regardless of whether or not they are coming to work. People are shopping locally and ordering delivery from their favorite SMA restaurants. Real estate is picking back up, and small groups of friends are starting to gather over dinner in people’s homes.

Life will come back, of this we are sure, but in what way is anyone’s guess. For the time being, we’re taking things one day at a time. Please follow us on Instagram or Facebook if you aren’t already. That’s where you’ll find most of our up-to-the moment activity.

Stay safe, stay healthy, and love one another—

Martha & Nicole
