Casa Hogar Corazón Valiente

Providing a new start for abandoned and neglected girls by giving them access to quality education, health services, and a safe, loving, and warm familial environment.

Current long-term volunteer opportunities include:

Psychology, nutrition, medicine, dentistry, and facilities maintenance. They are also in need of tutors to help the girls with their homework and people who can facilitate art and sports activities.

Ojalá Niños

Ojalá Niños is a non-profit year round program that gives 100 + indigenous children in the rural community of San Miguel Viejo, México the opportunity to explore their strengths through art, music and literacy in a safe place where children can gather and be guided without judgement. There is no age limit, no charge, and no child is turned away.

Long term volunteers are needed to help with fundraising, transportation, and procuring presenters to offer information about important issues like: nutrition, dental health, environmental consciousness, music, sports, etc.

Cruz Roja

The 252 volunteers at the Cruz Roja are always looking for more help. Possible areas include making community breakfast, repairing/sewing donated clothing, bringing/distributing water to communities, organizing events, volunteering at the Red Cross store that sells donated items, and teaching English to the paramedics so they can better communicate with patients. The Cruz Roja strives to serve the community better every day.

Feed the Hungry SMA

Feed the Hungry SMA relies almost entirely on private donations to deliver balanced meals, nutrition education, and ancillary programs to thousands of hungry children in economically disadvantaged communities. The focus is on packing food and delivering to school kitchens.

NOTE: In order to volunteer with FTH you must be a permanent resident of SMA or live here at least half of the year. Most of the volunteer positions require a long-term commitment, although there is no volunteer activity during school breaks (spring break or summer).

Centro Infantil de los Ángeles

Centro Infantil de los Angeles provides free, quality daycare and preschool education to children with the greatest need in San Miguel de Allende. This center affords working parents the comfort of knowing their children are fed, nurtured, and are learning in a safe, caring environment.

Volunteers are assigned to a particular area to help at the daycare in one of nine classrooms. Activities include: playing with children, arts/crafts, helping to feed and change babies’ clothes, assist on field trips, etc. Occasionally, volunteers have the opportunity to help with local fundraising events by conducting outreach and assisting with set-up and clean-up. Locals living in San Miguel can volunteer short or long-term.

Sociedad Protectora de Animales de San Miguel de Allende (S.P.A.)

The S.P.A. is the only no-kill shelter for cats and dogs in San Miguel de Allende. In operation since 1980, they house about 100 cats and dogs. Volunteers are the heart of the S.P.A.

With the exception of a few paid employees, the S.P.A.’s daily operations rely completely on help from volunteers. Volunteer opportunities include walking dogs and playing with puppies and cats. Other ways to help include sponsoring an animal, fostering, and adopting.

Donations are needed to cover the cost of food and care for their resident animals. Donations and volunteer inquiries can be made through their website here.

Biblioteca Publica de San Miguel

Volunteers are needed for many different projects at the library. Some opportunities include basic gardening in the central courtyard, a volunteer coordinator, tour guides, bilingual mentors for the scholarship program, assistance with website creation and social media, carpentry and upholstery of children's chairs, and book committee members to assist with book selection in English and Spanish.

Patronato Pro Ninos

Patronato Pro Ninos provides medical, dental, psychological and nutritional care for children and adolescents from economically deprived families in the municipality of San Miguel de Allende. Each year, thousands of children are helped through donations from their supporters.

Volunteer opportunities include: helping in the offices, guiding “Walking Tours of Historic Centro” for visitors to San Miguel, or supporting their dentists and doctors. Pro Niños provides the perfect way for you to leverage your skills, expertise, and passion for helping others. You’ll become more engaged in the community while helping children realize their potential.

So Others May Eat (SOME)

Volunteers at So Others May Eat strive to provide a hot nutritious meal in an attractive, fun, informative and respectful way to our elderly patrons of limited means.

Each week, SOME provides guests with an extended family dining experience, entertainment, a spiritual component, and an informational talk about important geriatric health concerns. Burial assistance and health monitoring are also provided to this at-risk segment of the San Miguel population. Gifts are given to guests to mark important holidays and birthdays.

Donations are greatly appreciated to help with the cost of providing a meal to up to 200 people weekly and can be made through the website here.
